Halle Berry Apologizes For Expressing Interest In Portraying Transgender Character In Upcoming Movie
Halle Berry caused quite the outrage on social media when she expressed interest in portraying a transgender male character in a new film. Furthermore, she is also in hot water for misgendering the said character!
It all started with a new Instagram Live interview she did with hairstylist Christin Brown.
During their chat, the actress revealed that she might take on the role of a trans man, explaining that it is ‘a story where the woman’s a trans character, so she is a woman that transitioned into a man. She is a character in a project I love, which I might be doing. This project got pitched to me right when I was on the brink of making Bruised and making my directorial debut and I so was in the mindset of getting in the body to play that… But this got pitched to me, and I thought, after I do this movie, that’s the character I’m going to play.’
Halle mentioned that she has an interest in ‘deep diving’ into ‘that world,’ most likely referring to the transgender community.
And that was not all! Berry kept calling them a ‘she’ and an important ‘female story’ to share.
As far as she is concerned, the challenging part would just be cutting all of her hair off!
A lot of people were also mad about Berry getting the role in the first place, regardless of what she said.
After all, they think a trans character should be played by a trans actor, which Halle Berry is not!

Following the backlash on social media, but also the education she got from the comments as a result, Berry returned to her platform to respond.

She apologized and explained that ‘As a cis woman, I understand now that I shouldn’t have considered the role, and the transgender community should have the opportunity to tell their own stories. I’m grateful for the guidance and the critical conversation over the past days and I’ll continue to listen, educate and learn from this mistake. I vow to be an ally and use my voice to promote better representation onscreen, both in front of and behind the camera.’
